here are varied activities in the Sierra de Montanchez and it is also conveniently situated in the centre of Extremadura so within reach of many historical sites including 3 world heritage towns, Merida, Trujillo and Caceres which are all within 40kms.
Montanchez is famous for its jamon, air-dried ham from the Iberic pig, which can be enjoyed in any of the many bars around the main plaza together with the strong local wine Pitara. There are also a few restaurants within walking distance where more varied meals can be enjoyed.
Walking in the sierra is a great experience, beautiful views and easy walking on the cobbled paths which are a feature of the Sierra de Montanchez. A long walk through the sierra will take you to the Garganta de Molinos, a spectacular gorge with the ruins of many water mills, mavellous views down to the village of Arroyomolinos and up to the peaks of the sierra.
Staying at the Casa Fontano is most convenient and pleasant base for enjoying the diverse touristic possibilities of the area. Longer trips will take you into Portugal, the Gredos mountains, Tentudia and the Villuercas mountains.
